Development Squad

The DISC Development programme is the next step up from Kiwiskate and the first step to becoming a competitive skater and joining the club.

Skaters who complete the Kiwiskate programme through the rink, or are approached by the Kiwiskate director prior to completion, are invited to join the development squads.  This programme, unique to the Dunedin Ice Skating Club, was established in 2005 in order to facilitate the development of young figure skaters in Dunedin and provide a group environment in which these skaters could practise and interact.

The Dunedin Ice Skating Club would like to thank the Community Trust of Otago for their ongoing support of the Development Programme. This financial support enables the club to provide the programme at a discounted rate which in turn provides more ice time for the skaters and helps support the families involved in the sport.

The Development Programme currently has two branches: Singles and Recreational Skating

General Development Squad

This programme includes ice time fees and coaching fees. There are 5 tier levels in this programme and up to 2-3 qualified coaches on the ice for each session. Tier 1 & 2 are for our more recreational skaters and tier 3-5 are for our competitive figure skaters. The lesson duration is 60 minutes and each tier has two classes per week during the school term. Currently our tier 2 has been split by age groupings of under 11 years and over 11 years.

First 30mins: Spent on basic skating skills, footwork, edges and balance exercises. This is performed in four groups using the full length of the ice rink.

Second 30mins: Spent on correct jumping technique and spinning technique. Depending on the level of the group, goals of the programme range from basic jumps and spins to doubles jumps and working on various features in spins tom improve technical scores in competition.
